As the tax season begins, preparation is key. Compiling W-2s and other income statements may seem daunting. Even more so for businesses! Between balance sheets, profit and loss statements, and retrieving interest amounts, the process feels never ending. However, it's all time well spent. We caution you to be diligent about keeping these documents secure.

If you are a current business owner, you may have received correspondence from the Georgia Business Document Center. Their “urgent” message is requesting $399.89 for an alleged business renewal. This company states “Every business must file an Annual Report through their site every new calendar year to continue business.” This is NOT true.

There is an annual REGISTRATION report that needs to be filed through the Secretary of State site directly which is typically a lower cost than the requested amount. Accurate Tax Prep Rep services a number of American businesses and we're appalled at the wording, price, and persistence of these scam messages. Through further research, we found that this company is NOT a government agency nor is it affiliated with the IRS. Also, shocker they do not accept refunds or returns for their costly service. This company must be utilizing an online Secretary of State database to contact business owners in hopes of getting them to pay these outrageous, unnecessary fees.

We recommend deleting the message, not responding, and possibly blocking the sender. The tax season is hectic enough, there is no need to worry yourself with scammers too.
